Le Baroque des Lumières

Le Baroque des Lumières

The exhibition at the Petit Palais, which follows on from the one devoted by the Carnavalet Museum in 2012 to the 17th century, aims to reveal the importance and diversity of Parisian religious painting from the Regency to the Revolution: from the heirs of the Grand Siècle, such as Largillière and Restout, to the proponents of the rocaille taste, from Lemoine to Carle Van Loo, to the best of neo-classicism, from Vien to David.

In a spectacular scenography, a large place will be reserved for the works still preserved in the Parisian churches which benefited, on this occasion, from an unprecedented restoration campaign. In addition to these immense altar paintings, which will be a revelation as they have recovered an unsuspected richness of color, the galleries of the Petit Palais will host sketches and other large canvases that have since been scattered in various museums, churches and cathedrals in the regions, thus offering the opportunity to rediscover an entire section of 18th century painting at its peak.

We made a video projected in Parisian cinemas to promote the exhibition.
